Originally booted with no sound from speakers or headphone jack. Looked into possible grounding issue, but it appears to be specific to this machines logic board. When I swap in a known good logic board sound works. I replaced the sound chip and there was some trace damage so I've added some bodge wires. Finally found the issue when recapping the logic board. One of the traces from the sound chip to the cap was broken. Fixed with bodge wires and sound now works. Sound is still pretty quiet, and I suspect maybe the grounding from the logic board to the case isn’t good due to some rust on the case shielding. Additionally, one of the edge connector pins was broken off so I had to fix with the broken pin and a bodge wire. I take extra care when inserting and removing the logic board. Analog board was recapped on 2022-07-22. Logic board on 2025-08-09.

Apple's last compact Mac, and its first with color — but not without compromise. The Color Classic's fixed 512×384 Sony Trinitron display was narrower than every other Mac of its era. Apple's cost-cutting created a machine beloved precisely for its limitations. The 'Mystic' upgrade — swapping in a Color Classic II board — gives it a 68030 and double the RAM without changing the cult-status exterior.
