Took working board from Centris 650, converted it to a Quadra 650 by adding a resistor and removing another, replaced the main clock oscillator to make it 33MHz, added full 33MHz 68040. Repaired some traces. Also, the board only has 4MB on board. Two 8MB SIMMs brings it to 20MB. Also has two VRAM SIMMs to allow it to use thousands of colors. Installed BlueSCSI with 32GB SD card and HD image containing MacOS 7.5.3 and a bunch of applications.
The Quadra 800 brought the 68040 to a full tower with three NuBus slots, built-in Ethernet and video, and the fastest SCSI implementation Apple had offered to date. It was the preferred workstation for video production and high-end desktop publishing throughout 1993 — a reliable, powerful, and upgradeable machine at a time when those qualities were not guaranteed.
